Take a look for yourself

Go to your nearest public gallery, look at the art and notice how many paintings there are by men versus women. Notice whether the gallery asks you for your input, or whether it just tells you stuff.  If you find things you like, or things you don't, do tell us, and do tell them!

Notice how many paintings there are of women with few or no clothes on, and how it makes you feel when you look at them. Notice how many of them have names, and how many do not, and compare to paintings of men. Notice how old they are, compared to paintings of men.

Write to your MP

Write to your MP telling them that it is time the government included diversity of curation in their funding agreements with galleries and museums. Find your MP’s email address.

Send a Freedom of Information request to your local gallery, asking:

• How many pieces of art do they have, and how many are by women or people of colour?

• How many pieces of art have they acquired in the last five years, and how many of those are by women or people of colour?

• How many special exhibitions have they had in the last five years, and how many of those were of women’s art? Or art by artists of colour?

• Do they have a diversity policy for curation, acquisitions and bequests, and if so could they send you a copy?
